Teesdale is an ideal destination for activities and adventures. The area is rich in cultural history with a world famous museum (Bowes Museum), fine stately homes (Raby Castle, Eggleston Hall, Rokeby Park), medieval ruins (Barnard Castle, Egglestone Abbey) The long industrial hertitage is celebrated (lead mining - Meet the Middletons exhibition in Middleton in Teesdale) and the Gaunless Valley Heritage Trail. Walkers can enjoy long distance routes (Teesdale Way), riverside walks, forest and village trails. The National Byway and C2C cycle routes take advantage of quiet country lanes. Hamsterley Forest offers different grades of route for mountain bikes. The River Tees is ideal for canoeing and fishing and Selset Reservoir offers opportunities for sailing and windsurfing. The river also has magnificent waterfalls including High Force, England's highest waterfall. There are several riding schools offering cross-country hacks and picnic rides.
